About

Why Retro Vault Exists

If you grew up with an Atari in the living room, a NES under the Christmas tree, or a Sega Genesis that got you through middle school — this site is for you.

Retro Vault exists because most retro gaming sites are written by people who didn't live it. They review emulators and handhelds the same way tech sites review graphics cards — specs, benchmarks, features. That misses the whole point.

Retro gaming isn't about specs. It's about getting back to that feeling. The specific weight of a NES controller. The sound of a Genesis startup. The way Super Mario World music sounded at 11 PM when everyone else was asleep.

We help adults in their 30s, 40s, and 50s find the right gear to recapture that. Whether you want to track down original hardware, buy a modern mini console, or grab a handheld that plays everything — we cut through the noise and tell you what's actually worth buying.

Our Standard

  • →Every pick is something we'd recommend to a friend who's serious about retro gaming
  • →We always cover budget options — not just premium picks
  • →When something isn't worth buying, we say so
  • →Affiliate relationships are disclosed — they don't change our rankings
  • →We write for people who actually played these games the first time around
